FOUNDER MESSAGE
Dear Supporters and Allies,
I am writing to you as Laxmi Ghalan, the Founder President of Mitini Nepal, an organization devoted to advancing the rights and dignity of Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender individuals in Nepal. As a lesbian activist, my focus has been on addressing the unique challenges faced by the LGBTI community, with a particular emphasis on improving sexual health, safeguarding human rights, engaging in advocacy, and enhancing the overall well-being of sexual and gender minorities, including lesbians, gays, bisexuals, and transgender individuals. I have chosen not to identify as either male or female but use the pronouns they/them. Through the platform of Mitini Nepal, I have worked tirelessly to provide a safe space for lesbian women like you to voice your concerns independently, ensuring your issues are not overshadowed by those of other members within the LGBTI community. Our journey began in 2002 with the establishment of the "Mitini Support Group," conceptualized to create a secure and separate space for lesbian women.
Recognizing the vulnerability and marginalization experienced by lesbians within the broader LGBTI community, my partner Meera Bajracharya and I, as the first openly lesbian Nepali couple, took the lead in forming the group. Since then, Mitini Nepal has grown under my leadership. In 2003, we initiated a hotline service exclusively for lesbians like yourself, aiming to reach out to others and share vital information. The success of this program has empowered many lesbians to come out, openly express their sexuality, and find support. Mitini Nepal has been at the forefront of the fight for LGBTI rights in Nepal since 2005, overcoming various challenges along the way. Personally, I have faced social and legal battles, particularly in preserving my relationship, a significant chapter in my life. Working on behalf of millions within the sexual minority community, my primary objective is to advocate for the rights of gender and sexual minorities. I firmly argue that the state should not deny identification to millions of sexual and gender minorities, including you. My main demand is the legal provision of citizenship for homosexuality, encompassing identity and the legal recognition of same-sex marriages.
Thank you for your continued support as we work towards a more inclusive and just society.
With determination,
Laxmi Ghalan
