"These are some brief introductory definitions of LGBTI. There is so much to learn about gender and sexual identity, so please understand these are very simple definitions. The definitions are not meant to offend anyone."

LESBIAN

Lesbians are women who are physically, mentally and emotionally attracted to women. These women show sexual desire with the other women of same sex like them. They don’t have sexual desire with opposite sex i.e. male.

GAY

Men who are physically mentally and emotionally attracted to men are Gay. These men show sexual desire with the other men of same sex like them. They don’t have sexual desire with opposite sex i.e. female.

BISEXUAL

People who have sexual desire, physical and mental attraction with both male and female are bisexual.

TRANSGENDER

Transgender is a term describing a person who changed gender, either from Male to Female OR Female to Male.

Men (transmen) are those persons who are female by birth but their gender identity looks like male in course of their age growth.

Women (trans women) are those persons who are male by birth but their gender identity looks like female in course of their age growth.

INTERSEX

An umbrella term used to describe people born with sex characteristics that do not fit typical binary notions of male or female bodies.

DATA OF SEXUAL AND GENDER MINORITIES ACCORDING TO 12th NATIONAL CENSUS, 2078

According to the Nepalese government’s office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers and the National Statistics Office, the results of the 12th National Census 2078 BS were made public on March 24, 2022. According to the results, the population of sexual and gender minorities was found to be 2,928, which is 0.01 percent of the total population. Among all genders, Bagmati province has the highest percentage with 32.7 percent, while Karnali province has the lowest with 2.8 percent. The National Census 2078 only counted the demographic details of individuals in the sexual and gender minority community under the category of male or female in the household survey based on biological sex. They were not included in the main questionnaire as a separate category.

DAY CELEBRATIONS

This day is dedicated to raising awareness of the discrimination and violence faced by lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and intersex people worldwide.

TDOV aims to celebrate and raise awareness about transgender people and their accomplishments while highlighting the challenges they still face.

Pride Month is celebrated in many countries around the world and commemorates the Stonewall riots that occurred in June 1969, which sparked the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement. Various events, parades, and activities take place throughout the month to celebrate diversity and promote LGBTQ+ rights.

This day raises awareness about the rights and challenges faced by intersex individuals, who are born with biological sex characteristics that do not fit typical definitions of male or female.

Lesbian Visibility Day, also known as Lesbian Visibility and Liberation Day, is celebrated on April 26th each year. It is a day dedicated to raising awareness and celebrating the achievements and contributions of lesbian individuals, as well as promoting lesbian visibility and rights.

This day celebrates and raises awareness about bisexuality, which often faces erasure and misconceptions within and outside the LGBTQ+ community.

TDoR honors the memory of transgender individuals who have lost their lives due to transphobia and violence. It aims to raise awareness about the ongoing violence and discrimination faced by the transgender community.

Menstrual Hygiene Day is celebrated annually on May 28th. It aims to raise awareness about the importance of good menstrual hygiene management and to break the stigma and taboos surrounding menstruation.

International Women’s Day is celebrated on March 8th every year. It is a global day that recognizes and celebrates the achievements of women, as well as highlights the ongoing struggle for gender equality and women’s rights.

The “16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence” is an international campaign that begins on November 25th, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, and ends on December 10th, which is Human Rights Day. The campaign aims to raise awareness and mobilize action to end violence against women and girls worldwide. It originated in 1991 and has since become a global movement. During these 16 days, individuals, organizations, and governments work together to advocate for women’s rights, challenge societal norms that perpetuate violence, and promote gender equality.

International Human Rights Day is celebrated on December 10th each year. It commemorates the day when the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) in 1948. The UDHR is a milestone document that proclaims the inalienable rights to which every human being is entitled, regardless of their race, color, religion, sex, language, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth, or other status.

Senior Citizen Day is celebrated on August 21st each year. This day is dedicated to honoring and showing appreciation for the contributions and achievements of senior citizens in society. It is a time to recognize the wisdom, experience, and valuable perspectives that older adults bring to our communities. Various activities and events are organized on this day to engage and celebrate senior citizens.

The International Day of Older Persons is indeed celebrated on October 1st each year. This day is recognized globally to raise awareness about issues affecting older individuals and to appreciate their contributions to society. The United Nations designated this observance to promote the rights and well-being of older persons and to address the challenges they face.
